Mystery Shopping Insights: Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is an international holiday that can be celebrated and appreciated by a vast number of people. We wanted to learn more about your Mother’s Day celebration and spending habits this year. We heard what you had to say in our Mother’s Day Anywhere Mission, and we’re ready to share the results with you. Let’s take a look!

Mother’s Day Gifts

Gifts are often associated with this holiday as a great way to show your appreciation for your mom. Are your expectations in line with mothers across the nation? Are your Mother’s Day gifting plans similar to other Mobee bees? Let’s find out.

To begin, 81 percent of survey participants plan to celebrate Mother’s Day with gifts this year. Of those people, 75 percent are planning on buying items in-store while 25 percent are planning on buying items online. Interestingly, most of the Mother’s Day purchases being made this year will be done in-store.

The most popular gifts among app users who are not mothers this year include:

  • Greeting Cards (52 percent)
  • Flowers (40 percent)
  • Gift cards (30 percent)
  • Experiences (28 percent)
  • Chocolate/Candy (27 percent)

In comparison, the gifts mothers are hoping for most include:

  • Experiences (57 percent)
  • Gift cards (46 percent)
  • Flowers (37 percent)
  • Greeting Card (36 percent)
  • DIY gifts (33 percent)

Based on these lists, it looks like the Mobee users know their mothers extremely well. The last thing we’ll look at for your shopping preferences are the most popular stores to buy Mother’s Day gifts from.

  • Discount stores (Walmart, Dollar Stores, Etc.…) (46 percent)
  • Target (37 percent)
  • Department stores (Macys, Nordstrom, JCPenney, etc.…) (24 percent)
  • Flower Shop (21 percent)
  • Paper/card store (The Paper Store, Hallmark Stores, etc…) (20 percent)

There you have it. Mother’s Day gift preferences and popular stores span a large number of products and stores. When it comes to gifts, the timeless saying reins true here, it’s the thought that counts.

Mother’s Day Celebration Plans

Mother’s Day is not all about the gifts. Spending the day with your family, and particularly your mother (or children if you are a mother) is an extremely important part of this holiday. Let’s take a look at some of our bee’s celebration plans this year.

To start off this section, let’s take a look at how many survey participants are planning on celebrating Mother’s Day this year. Based on the information we collected, 81 percent of people said yes. With that in mind, here are the most popular Mother’s Day celebration plans:

  • Spend the day with Mom/kids/family (63 percent)
  • Gifts/presents (48 percent)
  • Dinner (32 percent)
  • Breakfast/Brunch (24 percent)
  • Breakfast in bed (9 percent)
  • Beauty/spa treatment (8 percent)
  • Hosting/attending a party (5 percent)

Mother’s Day celebration plans can be anything from spending the day together watching movies, getting meals like breakfast, brunch or dinner, or treating your mother (or yourself) to a spa day. Regardless of your celebration plans, spending time with your mother (or children) is the main goal of this holiday and the Mobee Bees are on top of that.

Mother’s Day Spending

Now we get to look at everyone’s favorite subject, Mother’s Day spending. From gifts to meals, Mother’s Day doesn’t come without its costs. Let’s see what our survey participants are planning on spending on Mother’s Day this year.

First, we’re going to look at how much money moms who participated in this survey are expecting their family/children to spend on them:

  • $11 – $30 (44 percent)
  • Less than $10 (24 percent)
  • $31 – $60 (20 percent)
  • $61- $100 (7 percent)
  • More than $100 (4 percent)

Based on these results, it looks like moms don’t want you to spend a ton of money, they just want to spend time with their loved ones. Now, we can compare these results to the amount all survey participants plan on spending on Mother’s Day this year.

  • $31 – $60 (30 percent)
  • $11 – $30 (29 percent)
  • $61 – $100 (17 percent)
  • Less than $10 (13 percent)
  • More than $100 (9 percent)

Staying on the topic of Mother’s Day spending, the majority of it will happen within two weeks of the holiday with 72 percent of survey participants agreeing. It sounds to us like Mother’s Day is a great day to show your mom how much you care by buying her the gifts she wants and spending as much time with her as you can!
